STUDENT ACTIVITIES : 2008-2009 |

The first meeting held by the Students’ Council on August 21st 2008, was presided over by our Principal. She spoke to the members about the various duties, responsibilities and powers of the Council. The Council was also guided on how various programmes could be organized in college and how they should take part in Statutory and Non Statutory Committees of the college. The first function taken up by the council was the Teacher’s Day celebrations on 5th September, 2008. The students organized various music and dance programmes to entertain the professors. The function had a huge participation from the visually challenged students. On behalf of the Students’ Council, a graffiti banner was prepared which had appreciative comments and remarks by college students for the professors. The Students’ Council elections were held on 15th September 2008. There were two contenders for the post of the General Secretary, Kavita Natarajan and Saba Kaware. The members of the council voted on the day of the election. Kavita Natarajan was elected to the post of the General Secretary. |
Activities:
- Four students attended a two day workshop on ‘Life Enhancing Skills’ at S.I.E.S College of Commerce and Economics on August 22nd and 23rd 2008.
- An interactive Skin Care Clinic was conducted by Dr. Aarti Agarwal on 22nd August 2008.
- Three students attended a half day workshop on “Nurturing Leadership for True Citizenship” held at the Public Night Degree College ,Vakola , Santacruz ,on 28th August 2008.
- A Lecture on ‘Clean Creek Movement’ to save the Thane creek was conducted for the students of the college to create awareness among students on the methods used to maintain the ecological balance by the students of S.I.E.S. College on 3rd October 2008.
- To pay homage to the martyrs of the terrorist attacks (26/11) in Mumbai, the entire college congregated at the quadrangle, where candles were lit to pray for the brave souls who died for the cause of Mumbai.
- The members of the Students’ Council and students collected data about the common people, the staff on duty who provided great service to the people during the terror attack. These gallant people were felicitated at Shanmukhanda hall on 6th December 2008 by the S.I.E.S. Management.
- Students and staff participated in ‘Mumbai for Peace Human Chain ‘which was the largest solidarity event against terror in Mumbai on 12th December 2008. This has been appreciated by YUVA, an NGO with a General Consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
- A peace rally was organized by the University of Mumbai at Shivaji Park on 20th December 2008 to felicitate and pay homage to the martyrs and their families. Students and staff from our college actively took part in the rally.
- An evacuation drill was conducted by the Mumbai Fire Brigade on 22nd December 2008 under the guidance of the Fire Brigade Officer Mr D.S.Patil.
- The other major activity undertaken by the council is ‘Visions’ which is our annual intra and inter-collegiate festival. The Visions committee, headed by Kedhar Barve was ably supported by Anuja Kapadia, Kasturi Jathar and Kavita Natarajan. Both core members and volunteers had a huge participation from the council. With the departmental festivals becoming a part of Visions, it has grown to be a 3-day extravaganza. The immense success and huge participation of other colleges was the biggest success of the Student’s Council.
- A seminar titled “Alert Mumbaikar” was held on 10th January 2009 by the Mumbai Police in college, which students attended in huge numbers. Eminent personnel from the Mumbai Police department emphasized on the safety norms and procedures that we ought to follow to ensure our protection as well as others, at the time of emergencies and crisis.

The Student’s Council appreciates Saba Kaware and Rhea Sundaran for their continuous feedback with regard to cleanliness in the classrooms.
- Saba Kaware was awarded the Best All Rounder and Anuja Kapadia was awarded the Best Girl Student award.
